The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has found itself in a heated exchange with the New York Times (NYT) over a report suggesting the permanent closure of its Goddard Space Flight Center library, with books allegedly being 'tossed away'.
But here's where it gets controversial... NASA has issued a strong rebuttal, clarifying the situation and addressing the misleading narrative presented by the NYT. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman took to X (formerly Twitter) to set the record straight, emphasizing that NASA is not discarding important scientific and historical materials.
"At no point is NASA 'tossing out' valuable resources. This misunderstanding has led to a cascade of inaccurate headlines," Isaacman stated. He further highlighted the importance of NASA's ambitious plans, including sending astronauts deeper into space, returning to the lunar environment, and investing in orbital economies and scientific pursuits.
So, what's the truth behind the library closure? Isaacman revealed that the decision to close the library at Goddard was part of a long-planned facilities consolidation, approved in 2022 under the Biden administration. He assured that NASA researchers would still have access to the necessary scientific information and resources for their work.
"NASA follows a meticulous process to evaluate materials, ensuring they are digitized, transferred to other libraries, or preserved for historical purposes," Isaacman added.
And this is the part most people miss... The closure is part of a larger transformation effort at Goddard, with all in-person library services at Building 21 in Greenbelt paused since December 9, 2025. This includes collection checkouts and other services.
