The Battle of 'Beth': Peter Criss, the former drummer and vocalist of Kiss, has passionately refuted claims made by his fellow bandmate, Gene Simmons, regarding the creation of their beloved song 'Beth'. But here's where it gets controversial: Simmons boldly asserted that Criss had no involvement in writing the song, a claim that Criss vehemently denies.
Simmons recently stated that Criss' name on the songwriting credit was merely a result of 'politics' and hinted that Criss' pre-Kiss bandmate, Stan Penridge, was the true songwriter. But Criss isn't having any of it. He argues that Simmons' allegations are 'ridiculous' and that he was absent during the song's initial conception in the late '60s and its completion with producer Bob Ezrin.
And this is the part most people miss: Criss reveals that the song's evolution is key to understanding his contribution. It began as a rock song, and over time, with Criss' input, it transformed into the orchestral ballad that topped the charts in 1976. He wrote the melody and created the phrasing, while Penridge contributed the verse and chorus. But it was Criss' core melody that remained intact, even as Ezrin orchestrated and slowed down the tempo.
Interestingly, Ezrin supports Criss' version, recalling that the song was initially rockier and that he slowed it down and added the iconic piano part. He also confirms that Criss and Penridge wrote the original song, directly contradicting Simmons' claims.
